Why disc?

It's time for a post about the other part of my blog name, "disc golf." When I moved to North Dakota I was desperately looking for some sort of hobby to entertain me. I was looking for good stories to write for my job and thought it would be a good idea to tell people about the free disc golf course on base. I reached out to a few people and was told about this guy, Ian Bush, who disced all the time. Since then, I've been hooked. Ian and I formed a little group of guys that got together once a week to disc and we still do now. The only difference now is that we all bring our babies with us. There is a reason for everyone to love disc golf, so let me answer the question, "why disc?"

For me, it's a challenge. If you are like me and you love sports and love challenges then you need to disc. No matter the course, there are always challenges on each hole. I played a course last night for the first time that had 10ft wide tunnels through the woods to throw through. That was not easy. What if the wind kicks up? You have to adjust the angle, power, speed and release of your throw to get the same result you would without the wind. When you get to my level of obsession, there are tons of tournaments where it's not so much about the competition, but the people. Ian and I did a tournament in Bemidji and met some great people. We spent a whole day talking with complete strangers and getting to know more about them and encouraging each other through the course.

But what if you aren't obsessed, aren't looking for a challenge and don't care for sports? Disc golf can be fun for anyone. About a year ago, I finally convinced my wife to disc with me. She wasn't very good at throwing a disc, was nine months pregnant, hit a miserable, but she had fun. We enjoyed the walk and I poked fun at how I had to pick up her disc each time because her pregnant belly wouldn't allow her to reach down that far. It was great. We both had so much fun and a few days later we had our daughter. I like to think the reason my daughter came out a few weeks early is because she wanted to join us on the course.

Here is a list of things to love about disc. I. Eat you will find one you enjoy:

Walking in nature

Cheap and fun

Varying levels of difficulty

Fun for pros and casual players

Constantly meet new people

A surprisingly good workout

There are many more reasons to enjoy disc, but I don't have the time to list them. Old, young, athletic, can't throw your way out of a paper bag, competitive, or just looking for camaraderie you will enjoy being on the course. Go to the store and pick up a three disc starter pack for about $20 and go have fun. If my wife, who hates outdoors and the heat, can enjoy playing a round at nine months pregnant in the middle of July, then anyone can love disc golf.
